Medical and Non-Medical Uses and Applications of Viagra

The drug Viagra has varied applications. In this article light will be thrown on some of the uses of Viagra. It should be brought to the notice of all that Viagra is not only used for erectile dysfunction and sexual disorders. Let us see what the applications of this famous drug are:

Sexual dysfunction: The primary application of the drug Sildenafil is in the treatment of ED i.e. improper erection during sexual intercourse leading to unfulfilled sexual desires. This drug is now a standard treatment to get rid of erectile dysfunction and related problems including diabetes. People consuming antidepressants often suffer from sexual dysfunction. This dysfunction can have varied reasons, their illness or their treatment. A study in 2003 proved that Sildenafil citrate can efficiently improve the sexual functionalities in men who are on antidepressants. The earlier reports in the year 1999 proved that this drug can also improve the sexual functionalities in female patients who are on antidepressants as well. Since then the drug which is present in Viagra has become a big hit and the most widely used drug to fight with sexual impotency and disorders regarding penile erection.

Pulmonary hypertension: Apart from erectile dysfunction (ED), there is one more effective application of Viagra. The drug Sildenafil citrate present in Viagra can cure PAH or the pulmonary arterial hypertension which is a rare disease. It leads to the relaxation of the arterial wall and so that the arterial pressure and resistance decreases. As a result the right ventricle has a minimum workload thus minimizing the chances of right sided cardiac arrest. PDE5 is distributed primarily within the arterial walls, the smooth muscles of the penis and lungs and so Sildenafil citrate acts selectively in these areas and vasodilation is also not induced in other areas within the body. The FDA, U.S received an additional registration by Pfizer for the drug Sildenafil, and later on it was approved in June 2005. To avoid being confused with Viagra, the preparation was named Revatio with the 20 mg tablets being white and round. Later on Sildenafil joined the therapies based on bosentan and prostacyclin for pulmonary hypertension.

Altitude phobia: Sildenafil has proved to be worthy in the treatment and prevention of the high altitude pulmonary edema that is related to altitude sickness often suffered by mountain rangers and climbers. Although this effect has recently been discovered, the drug has already been accepted as an efficient remedy to cure altitude sickness particularly when the situation is such that the standard rapid descent treatment has been delayed somehow.

Application in sports: Professional sports person have also started consuming Viagra because they think that their muscles will be enriched due to opening of the blood vessels and thus their performance will enhance considerably.

The above mentioned uses are the medical applications of Viagra. But the use of this drug is not only confined to medical purposes. Let's have a look on the non medical applications of Viagra:

Recreational uses: Viagra has become very popular with the youngsters over these years. Although its use is pointless in young, the drug is often used for recreational purposes. Viagra is mixed with methylenedioxymethamphetamine and many other stimulants by some users with a view of compensating the side effects caused by many amphetamines trying to tackle erectile dysfunction.

Prevention of plant wilting: a dilute solution of Sildenafil and water can prolong the time significantly before cut flowers wilt.
